Long before she became one of the defining voices of rock music, Janis Joplin was a young woman who struggled to fit into the expectations of the community where she grew up.
Born on January 19, 1943, in Port Arthur, Texas, she was raised in a working-class family by her mother, Dorothy, a college registrar, and her father, Seth Joplin, an engineer employed by Texaco.
