Alleged Cartel Leader Receives Sentence in High-Profile Criminal Case

Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada Garcia, one of the most influential figures in the history of Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, was sentenced to life in federal prison on July 20, 2026.

The sentence was imposed in federal court in Brooklyn after Zambada pleaded guilty in August 2025 to leading a continuing criminal enterprise and participating in racketeering. The court also entered a $15 billion forfeiture judgment connected to proceeds attributed to the organization’s drug-trafficking operations.
